Dave Sharpe is a combat veteran who served overseas in Operation Enduring Freedom. Upon his return to the U.S., Dave found that the hardships of war started to take a toll on him. However, with the aid of pet therapy and his loving dog, Cheyenne, Dave was able to get his life back to normal. Motivated by this experience, he and other combat veterans formed Pets2Vets.
The Pets2Vets program is an animal adoption program for veterans who do not qualify for a government-supplied service dog. It has three primary goals:
- Help our nation's heroes and their families with rehabilitation through pet therapy
- Help sheltered pets by providing them with homes
- Raise public awareness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Under this program, combat veterans recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Northwest D.C. are provided transportation to The Washington Animal Rescue League to meet animals for adoption. They select a pet through the shelter’s innovative Meet Your Match program. They then have weekly visits with the animal at the League until they are discharged from Walter Reed. At that point, Pets2Vets transports the animals to the adopters’ homes, wherever that may be. The League waives all fees for Pets2Vets adoptions.
“It's all for our nation's heroes and homeless pets! They sacrifice so much...let's give back! Pets2Vets' Board of Directors and I are excited to partner with the League!”
